In 1400, King Richard II of England dies in the Tower of London. Henry IV becomes King.
Geoffrey Chaucer dies in 1400, leaving his famous Canterbury Tales, one of the great works of English literature, incomplete.
A capitalist economy that has its roots in earlier centuries rises in Europe.
Incas turn the steep slopes of the Andes Mountains into arable land through terracing. The terraces (andanes) are covered with soil and topsoil carried up from the mountain valleys.
In 1402, at the Battle of Angora, Tamerlane's army defeats the forces of the Ottoman sultan Bayazid I.
In an attempt to protect citizens from the Black Death in 1403, Venice's doge mandates that people wishing to enter the city be quarantined for a period of time.
In 1405,Emperor Yung Lo launches the first Chinese sea expedition. It is led by a Muslim eunuch, Ma, who calls himself Cheng Ho.
Bohemian clergymen denounce Jan Hus, who has been preaching against clerical abuse and corruption, to the archbishop of Prague in 1408.
In 1408, the Chinese explorer Cheng Ho begins a second sea expedition, during which he captures the King of Ceylon and the Sinhalese royal family.
In 1409, Pope Alexander V orders that all books written by John Wycliffe be surrendered. Jan Hus publicly defends Wycliffe's heresies, and the archbishop of Bohemia excommunicates the dissident preacher one year later.
In 1409, in an attempt to end the Great Schism, the Council of Pisa deposes both popes (Gregory XII in Rome and Benedict XII in Avignon) and elects Peter Philarges, who will reign as Alexander V.
