Arnaldus de Villa Nova (a.k.a. Arnaud de Villeneuve), a professor of medicine, distills the first brandy at Montpellier's medical school in 1300.

King Philip the Fair of France orders that Pope Boniface VIII be forced to stand trial over the issue of papal supremacy. Boniface is seized and taken to Rome, where he dies humiliated just weeks later.

In 1305, Scottish patriot William Wallace (a.k.a. Braveheart) is captured and brought to London to stand trial for treason. He is found guilty, hanged, and his corpse is drawn and quartered.

The Knights of St. John of Jerusalem, a military order established in 1113, purchases the island of Rhodes in 1306. The order remains there until 1522.

Jews are expelled from France and England in 1306.

Edward I, King of England, dies in 1307. His only surviving son ascends the throne as Edward II, beginning a reign that is tarnished by rumors of gay love affairs.

Charles II, King of Naples, dies in 1309 after being forced to renounce his claim to Sicily. His son, Robert, succeeds him.

The Babylonian Captivity that witnesses the transfer of the papal seat from Rome to Avignon, France, begins in 1309 when anarchy seizes Rome and many in the city turn against Pope Clement V. The papacy remains in Avignon until 1377.
