King Louis VII of France dies in 1180 and is succeeded by his son, Phillip II Augustus, who was crowned at the coronation cathedral of Rheims a year earlier.

Jews are banished from France in 1182.
Poet Saigyo-hosi writes Senzaishu. Saigyo-hosi had left his wife and family at age 23 to become a priest and wander around Japan. He is known for his short poems of 31 syllables, tanka.
Cyprus achieves her independence from the Byzantine Empire in 1184.
Pope Lucius III excommunicates Peter Waldo, the leader of the growing Waldensian movement, in 1184.
In 1184, Canterbury Cathedral reopens after a five-year rebuilding campaign headed by William of Sens.
Shoguns (generals) assume power in Japan, rendering Emperors puppets until the second half of the 19th century. The coming centuries witness many civil wars between the daimyo, or feudal barons.
